We recently reported on the rumor of the iPad 3 being released with a Retina Display. It now seems that there is also news for the graphics in the iPad 3 and the iPhone 6. That’s right the iPhone 6.
Imagination Technologies, the company responsible for the graphics processor in the iPad and the IPhone, recently announced that six companies have chosen their next PowerVR Series 6 GPU. Several of the companies have already been revealed, and include Texas Instruments and ST-Ericsson. Three companies however have licenses and have not yet been announced.
Connection with the iPad 3?
Apple of course has been a customer of Imagination Technologies for several of their mobile iDevices. They are also an investor in the company, owning a 9.5% stake. The current iPad 2 is produced with the PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU. Coupled with the new A5 chip Apple has claimed the iPad 2 is nine times faster then the original iPad. The upcoming release of a new GPU would of course provide even higher gains compared to the previous models. The new processor will be compatible with its predecessor, making it an easy upgrade for Apple.
This increase in processing power will of course be needed if the rumors of a Retina Display are true. Apple will have to find a balance between high definition graphics via the Retina Display and the processing power they have. With the addition of the new PowerVR this will be a lot easier to accomplish.
This of course doesn’t confirm that there will be a high definition display on the iPad 3. It in my mind is just another piece of the puzzle. Many things have to fall into place for it even to be an option for the iPad 3. Even if the release date of the iPad 3 isn’t until early 2012, there are many things that need to happen. A dependable source for the displays that can produce a large amount must first be acquired. With recent battles with Samsung they look to be out of the question. LG has a similar display, but isn’t able to produce them to scale yet. It seems that the power will now be available, so there is hope for the iPad 3 and your dream of a Retina Display.
